So Why Is Sony Raising Prices?

Sony has officially blamed “ongoing pressures in the global economic landscape.” But dig a little deeper and the real story becomes clearer.

Memory chips, specifically DRAM, are a critical component inside every PS5. Over the past year, DRAM contract prices have surged more than 170% year-over-year. The reason is tied directly to the AI boom: data centres building out AI infrastructure are consuming memory chips at a record pace, squeezing supply for everyone else, including consumer electronics makers like Sony.

Simply put, Sony is paying more to build each console, and now you are paying more to own one.

This Is Already the Second Hike in Less Than a Year

Let that sink in for a moment. Sony already raised PS5 prices in August 2025, though that increase was a relatively small $50 per model and most people moved on quickly.

This time is different. The increases range from $50 on the PlayStation Portal all the way to $150 on the PS5 Pro.

And if you zoom out to launch day in 2020, the PS5 Digital Edition started at $399.99. It now costs $599.99. That is a $200 jump, or 50% more, in under six years.

Is Xbox or Nintendo Next?

Sony’s move has put the entire gaming industry on watch. Analysts believe Microsoft and Nintendo are facing the same cost pressures, and both could announce their own price adjustments in the weeks ahead.

Nintendo is in the trickiest position. The Switch 2 is still in its early growth phase, and raising prices now could dampen the momentum it has been building. But if memory costs keep climbing, even Nintendo may have little choice.

Microsoft has stayed quiet for now, but do not read too much into the silence.

You Have Until April 1 to Beat the Price Rise

The window is short but it is real. Current PS5 prices remain valid through April 1, 2026. From April 2 onward, the new pricing takes effect at retailers globally.

Buying now versus waiting just one week could save you between $50 and $150, depending on the model you choose. For most people, that is a grocery run, a streaming subscription for months, or a brand new game on day one.

The PS5 Pro at $899.99 is the one to watch. It is now hovering just below the $1,000 mark, a psychological threshold that gaming hardware has rarely crossed. At that price, it stops feeling like a console and starts feeling like a luxury purchase.

Are you rushing to buy a PS5 before April 2, or has this price hike put you off entirely? Drop your thoughts in the comments below and share this with a fellow gamer who needs to act fast.
